Witches

Yeah, I know it is October, but that is not why I am thinking about witches. For awhile, Vampires were all the rage, will witches be as popular as vampires were ten years ago? There are so many types of witches both promoted and reviled in pop culture. Books, movies, tv shows and stories from all times have incorporated witches and witchcraft into moral lessons, adventure stories, fun and terror. Upsidedown Magic (originally book series, now a movie) just arrived on the Disney Channel recently and had an interesting take on magic and magical training.

Where powers come from/affinity to elements are fun topics to discuss and span decades of stories, legend and lore.

Witches can be heroes and villains, main characters or side notes just like other beings. The Dresden Files, the Harry Potter series, The Magicians, and Discovery of Witches are all different takes on the idea of ‘The Witch’. Is there just one witch archetype? We can talk about maiden, mother and crone as well as healer or predator. Good versus Evil has many faces and occasionally a witch has a starring role in the narrative.

Even in vampire stories there are often witches, the Bloodlines series features vampires and also few witches. (Remember the Vampire Academy series? Excellent books, movie was….. less than excellent.)

As in the Wizard of Oz, “Are you a good witch or a bad witch?”

So what kind of witch do you want to be?

The “How To” of Writing – Suggestions?

I have recently become interested in learning about self publishing or Indie Publishing and I have learned a bit about what I don’t know and need to learn about. There is a LOT to learn. There’s the whole writing/editing part of writing, which I know about and am working on. AND there is the marketing/social media/business side of things which I know very little about. <obviously!>

This is one of those occasions where I think I have a bit of a clue, then learn that the “Right” way to do things takes a lot more work to get it correctly done. When I learn the WHY behind some of the reasons, I am much more inclined to listen and to follow that advice.

Have you read a good “how to” book/blog/resource?
Have you received some good/golden advice?

Advice on writing, publishing, storytelling, there is a great deal out there, and a lot to wade through!
